CO₂ Mineralization for a More Climate-Friendly Building Materials Industry

How can CO₂ not only be avoided but also used as a valuable resource? The climate-tech startup Co-reactive is addressing this question. The team is developing a technology for continuous CO₂ mineralization, in which captured CO₂ is converted into high-performance, CO₂-negative cement substitutes. The goal is to reduce emissions from the building materials industry while providing sustainable alternatives to conventional cement components.

The exist research transfer program played a crucial role in the journey from research to company founding. As CEO and co-founder Andreas Bremen explains, the main challenge was to validate the technology through extensive testing and thereby lay the groundwork for future investments. The exist research transfer program enabled the team to navigate this crucial development phase within the university setting and bridge the gap between scientific findings and investment readiness. Furthermore, the funding laid the groundwork for transforming hardware-oriented research into a resilient company. Access to infrastructure, workspaces, and a supportive scientific environment enabled the team to achieve technological milestones, professionalize processes at an early stage, and significantly reduce the risk associated with key development steps. At the same time, the funding established important credibility and facilitated collaboration with partners and investors.

Today, Co-reactive is working to transition its technology from the pilot scale to industrial application. Following a successful seed funding round of 6.5 million euros, the company is preparing to build a demonstration plant and is developing the next steps for scaling up. Co-reactive’s story exemplifies how the existing technology transfer program supports scientific innovations on their path to market and lays the foundation for sustainable growth.
